Dermatitis Herpetiformis, also known as “Duhring illness”, is a chronic skin disease with symptoms such as itching and eczema. It is noticeable through red pustules and blisters, which appear on elbows, knees, buttocks, neck, throat, shoulders, as well as on the lower back. The rash is similar to a Herpes rash, however, it should not be mistaken for the virus. The connection between Dermatitis Herpetiformis and coeliac disease is that both illnesses manifest themselves through a sensitive reaction to gluten. This does not mean though that both conditions always appear together. In order to avoid the symptoms for both coeliac and Dermatitis Herpetiformis a gluten-free diet should be adhered to.
